There are a variety of solutions available to you, depending on the property, the area around the property and your budget. In this article we will discuss a couple of approaches.

Plant Trees & Preserve Current Trees

The far-reaching and deep root systems of trees effectively absorb water over a sizeable area. The trees’ canopy also reduces the fall of rainwater allowing the ground to soak up more water than it would otherwise.

Rain Gardens

These gardens are planted in slight ground depressions that collect water and allow the water to gradually seep into the soil. We use water-hungry plants, permeable soil and mulch in the garden so that considerable amounts of water can be absorbed swiftly, typically in a couple of hours. Rain gardens can be almost any size depending on the situation, and are typically planted at the base of a slope; anywhere where water naturally flows or can be directed.

As soil and air temperatures warm and the grass starts to green up, our first inclination is to help the turf recover from winter by applying a “good dose” of fertilizer. However, that “good dose” can actually be creating more damage than helping your grass. The turf grass plant efficiently stores food during the fall, thus has a built-in food source available for spring green up. In most cases, all that is needed to help your grass get through its initial stage of growth is a light rate, high quality, balanced fertilizer. Heavy rates of fertilizer in spring force the turf to create a lot of lush, leafy growth often at a time when the root system is not developed enough to support it. This lush growth is also more susceptible to diseases like leaf spot and melting out.

Should You Seed In Spring?

Late summer through early fall is an optimal seeding window for our region. Cooler temperatures and fall rains promote rapid turf establishment, and we experience less pressure from broadleaf weeds and annual grassy weeds (e.g. crabgrass and foxtail) at this time of year. We may not always have the luxury of waiting until fall to begin seeding.

Here are some reasons we need to begin to seed this spring:

The turf entered winter in a weakened condition due to drought, heat stress, or over use.
Due to limited snow cover and cold, windy conditions, turf was exposed to significant winter desiccation (drying).
Planned site activities for the coming season do not allow for seeding to be done in fall.

If you do need to seed in spring, it’s important to remember these key items to ensure effectiveness:

DO NOT apply any preemergent to the area that needs to be seeded. Preemergent will keep the good grass seed from germinating. By using preemergent, you may need to be prepared to use more expensive post emergent crabgrass control products in these areas.
Be very careful about which weed control products are used in newly seeded areas. There is a new product on the market that can control weeds in newly seeded areas but most will damage young developing seedlings.
As with fall seeding, moisture, fertilization, proper seed bed preparation and seeding rates, are critical to the success of the project. If you are considering spring seeding, to ensure seeding’s effectiveness, make sure all of these factors are taken into consideration.
